2012 NIRA ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR- BILL LAYCOCK

Each year the NIRA and the NIRA Alumni team up to give a beatiful Maynard Buckle to person who has contributed significantly, over a period of years, to the growth and progress of College Rodeo.  This year Bill Laycock joined Sylvia Gann Mahoney, Bob Clore, Sonny Sikes, Charlie Rankin, Evelyn Bruce Kingsbery, Walt Garrison and John Smith in that distinguished group.

BILL LAYCOCK has a long history of service to College Rodeo.  A native of Wyoming, he was a student at the University of Wyoming back in 1949 when the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association was begun.  Bill has a doctorate in Range Management and was always involved in college rodeo and rodeo clubs throughout his career. At th University of Wyoming he was the co-advisor for the rodoe team from 1991 until 1999.  He has been a faculty director for the Central Rocky Mountain Region, and served on the NIRA Board.  Bill and with his wife Charlotte  are charter members of the NIRA Alumni, serving as Secretary-Treasure. Over the years, Bill and Charlotte have mentored many young college students.

Bill knew that the NIRAA needed to become a non-profit organization to best serve its purpose in promoting college rodeo.  He worked with an attorney to achieve tax-exempt status for the NIRAA and he convinced the lawyer to do so pro bono!

Bill has worked tirelessly and out of the spotlight for over sixty years to promote college rodeo. Bill and Charlotte have two children and two grandchildren are are enjoying retirement at their home in Laramie.
